This is a picture of me doing a rabies vaccination. Emily guides me through and taught me where to do the injection and to pull back to check for blood. I also get to help with gathering the things she needs for the appointment like a speculum for floating teeth and drawing up shots. I got to see how to float teeth, vaccinate, clean a sheath, do surgery on a carcinoma tumor on the eye, take ex rays on a pastern and examine for different health conditions common in horses like cushings disease and insulin resistance.

Heaves in Horses
Heaves is a chronic non- infectious airway condition in horses that also is called Recurrent Airway Obstruction or RAO or COPD. The disease occurs in horses more than 6 years of age and is the result of an allergic reaction to inhaled particles. You will hear a dry sound while coughing. When your horse is exposed to an allergy producing substance in the air like dust and pollen, cells in his lungs react by releasing chemicals that cause air passage linings to swell, thicken and produce mucus when neh breather air gets trapped in within these thickened passages. He has to use extra effort to get rid of the air. No cure for heaves, put the horse in a clean stall or damp pasture not next oa dusty road. Medication from your vet will help. |
